Kande Viharaya Temple

Built in the early 18th Century, the Kande Viharaya is a Buddhist temple in the Kalutara District, celebrated for its position as a Buddhist Education Center and picturesque location.

While the structures in the temple including the image house, the stupa, and the Bodhi Gara have gone through extensive renovation throughout the years, the Bodhi Tree in the temple is believed to be more than 300 years old and is held in great reverence.

Despite its religious significance and the importance as a Buddhist Education Center many visit the temple for the great view it offers from the top of the mountain. Pilgrims and visitors to the temple have to follow a trail of well worked out steps to the top of the mountain, where they are greeted by a giant seated Buddha overlooking the temple as well as the scenic view around.
