With consistent waves and two kilometers of shallow sandy beaches, Weligama Bay is a great place for surfers trying to build a connection with the waves.
The shallow sandy beach of Weligama Bay is one of the best beaches in Southern Sri Lanka to catch your first wave. Protected from the wind and rough weather, surfing at the bay can still be manageable even when the rest of the beaches in the area are all blown out.
Surfing noobs can start at the first light of the day when the tide is just right and carry on surfing until the daybreak with a continuous flow of uncontended waves that hardly rise above 2.5 meters.
With a comparatively longer season that spans between October and April, Weligama Bay is best for slow rides on low powered waves with lazy lefts and rights in the morning. Although lazy by name and lazy by nature, surfers will find that more powerful waves and swells can occur as the day moves towards noon with some waves as high as five feet.
